Recognition of British Civil Partnerships (30/04/2009)

"News for Civil Partners in France:  On 28 April the French Parliament passed an amendment to article 515-7-1 of the Civil Code which will now read as "Les conditions de formation et les effets d'un partenariat enregistré ainsi que les causes et les effets de sa dissolution sont soumis aux dispositions matérielles de l'Etat de l'autorité qui a procédé à son enregistrement".

This amendment, which will become French law upon publication in the Journal Officiel (due to take place shortly), sets out that the conditions of establishing, the legal effects, as well as the the causes and effects of the dissolution of registered partnerships will be subject to the laws of the jurisdiction which registered the partnership.

The exact impact and scope of this amendment to the law will emerge over the coming weeks. We are in close contact with French officials and we will release further information when available.  In the meantime, the UK Government welcomes this change which in due course will make a significant improvement to the lives of British Civil Partners living in France."
