How to hold a civil partnership in France

PACS

The British Embassy Consular Section cannot give authoritative advice on the formalities that a British person must complete in order to hold a civil partnership in France (PACS), under French law. Such advice must be obtained from the "tribunal d’instance" where the civil partnership (PACS) is to take place. Requirements may vary for each tribunal. It is therefore essential that you first meet with them in order to determine their exact documentary requirements and terms of validity.

Documents:

If the tribunal has asked you to obtain a Certificate of Law (Certificat de coutume), please click on the appropriate link below. The Certificat de coutume includes personal particulars of the applicant and a statement of British law as regards PACS.

British nationals residing in France: PACS application form [Word, 58KO]

UK residents: PACS application form

If you require a certificate of Non PACS, please print this document to give to the tribunal.

Payments:

Postal payments can be made in the following ways:

  • Mandat Cheque or Mandat Cash (postal orders) available from French Post offices or guaranteed banker's cheque (not a banker's draft). Cheques must be worded in French and made payable to "British Embassy Paris". We no longer accept personal cheques.
  • Credit card (payment authorisation form)
  • If you prefer to come in person to the consulate, you can pay by credit card or cash.
