Passport applications are currently not being accepted at the British Embassy in Sana’a. First time applicants must apply in person at the British Embassy in Amman, Jordan. See the How to apply from Jordan passport page for further information. If you are renewing your passport you can apply direct to Regional Passport Processing Centre in Paris (see below).
We strongly advise all British Nationals in Yemen without valid travel documents to apply for an Emergency Passport to immediately leave Yemen. If you have an alternative travel document or can obtain one quickly e.g. a Yemeni passport, you should use this to leave the country immediately.
All applications for Emergency Passports for immediate travel from Yemen should now be made directly to the British Embassy in Amman, Jordan, either in person or by sending the application and supporting documents by postal courier to this address:
Consular Section
British Embassy
(PO Box 87) Abdoun
Amman 11118
Jordan
The fee for an Emergency passport is JD87 / 96 Euros / YER25500.
If applying in person in Amman, payment for this service is in Jordanian Dinars cash only. This is the only payment option.
If applying by postal courier, payment must be made in Yemeni Rials, cash, or banker's draft at the time of receiving your Emergency Passport in person from the British Embassy Sana'a.
You must not send cash and we do not accept personal cheques.
The Emergency Passport (EP) that is issued to you must include the date and route details of your intended journey from Yemen to the UK.
If applying in person to Amman, the applicant must present themselves to officials at the Embassy – this includes child applicants, who must be accompanied by their parents. Applications must be made on the appropriate passport application form, with full supporting documents, photos and the correct fee in Jordanian Dinars cash only. Your application will be assessed in Amman and, if eligible, an Emergency Passport issued immediately if you intend to travel to the UK from Jordan, provided that you can supply flight details for the journey. If you intend to return to Yemen before travelling to the UK then you will need to pick up the Emergency Passport from the British Embassy Sana’a.
If your postal application is successful you will be contacted to arrange a time to collect your EP from the British Embassy Sana’a. Once this time is arranged you should book travel from Yemen to the UK, and bring these details with you to the appointment. The applicant must be present when picking up the EP, and must bring the fee in Yemeni Rials (YER25500), two passport photos (in addition to the two submitted with the application) and a valid form of identification.
If travelling from Yemen to the UK, you must obtain from the Yemeni authorities in Sana’a for an exit visa. This costs 2000 Yemeni Rials and can only be arranged after the EP has been issued. It is important that you allow sufficient time between receiving your EP and travelling for the exit visa to be arranged, as you will not be permitted to leave Yemen without it. An exit visa can take one or two days to arrange and the relevant authority is open Saturday – Wednesday 0800 – 1300 (local time). We will give you the address of the authority when you come to collect your EP.

• Your passport has been received by the Regional Passport Processing Centre in Paris or the Embassy in Amman.
• The application is being processed as quickly as possible but it could take several days to courier the passport back to Sana’a, via Amman for collection.
• If you have an alternative travel document or can obtain one quickly e.g. a Yemeni passport, you should use this to leave the country immediately.
• If you are waiting for a passport already issued but not returned to you, you should contact the British Embassy in Sana’a to make an appointment to obtain an Emergency Passport (EP). If you are eligible for an EP you are strongly advised to accept it and leave the country.
• If you can travel to Amman or Cairo on your Yemeni passport, the British Embassies there can also offer to issue an EP for onward travel to the UK. Yemenis do not need a pre-arranged visa to travel to Egypt or Jordan.
• Your full validity passport will be returned to the Embassy in Sana’a for collection as long as the Embassy remains open.
• Or we can arrange for the passport to sent to the Embassy in Amman or Cairo for collection.
• Or we will retain the passport in Paris until notified by you of a forwarding address if you intend to leave Yemen in the meantime.
First time applicants must apply in person at the British Embassy in Amman, Jordan. See the how to apply from Jordan passport page for further information. First time applications submitted direct to Paris, by relatives in the UK on behalf of relatives in Yemen, will be returned. First time applications must be submitted, in person, to Amman, with the correct payment and documents. Applying direct to Paris will cause unnecessary delays and we would need to seek additional payment to forward the application by courier to Amman.
If you are renewing your passport you can apply direct to Regional Passport Processing Centre in Paris (see below).
All full-validity passport applications must include a completed passport application form, two identical photographs, and the originals of all other supporting documents. We cannot accept photocopies. Please read the guidance under the appropriate sub-heading in the What passport do I need? section to ensure you enclose the correct documents. Missing or incomplete documents will delay your application.
We may need to contact you by email or telephone to arrange for collection of your passport, or to request further information in support of your application. Therefore please ensure you include your email address and current telephone number on the passport application form.
We recommend that you send us your application by secure means such as registered post or a courier. If using a courier to submit your application you should not pay for a return service as this is covered by a separate fee charged by us - see below.
Passport fees are:
Adult passport
• 32-page passport – 164 Euros
• 48-page passport – 198 Euros
Child Passport
• Child passport (32 pages) – 104 Euros
Courier fee – Each customer will be required to pay a courier fee to cover the cost of returning supporting documents from Paris and the return of the passport from the UK.
The above fees are subject to change without notice.
You should pay by credit card using the debit/credit card payment form [PDF 170KB, opens in new window]
Payments can also be made using the following method:
• International Postal Order - Mandat-cheque or mandat-cash, payable to "British Embassy Paris". Please note that if you pay using this method, it may take longer, as mandats are sent between banks before they are forwarded on to our passport office.
Payment should include the appropriate passport fees as well as the fees for return postage.
From 1 March 2012, we will not provide a receipt unless you have supporting documents to be returned or if you specifically ask for one. If paying by credit card you can do this by using the tick box on the credit card mandate form or if you are paying by another method by making a note in the ‘other information’ section of your Passport Application form. If you have no supporting documents to be returned and you request a receipt, you will need to pay the full courier fee for the return of supporting documents as well as the fee for sending your new passport from the UK.
Please ensure that you submit photographs that meet our criteria - see the IPS rules for photographs. Failure to do so will delay the processing of your application whilst we wait for correct photographs to be submitted.
We aim to process the new passport within four weeks from the date the fee is taken and the application contains all of the information we need. Failure to provide all of the required documentation will result in your application being delayed or returned. If you are replacing a lost or stolen passport, you should allow at least six weeks. We would remind customers that travel should not be booked until a passport has been issued and received by you. We cannot accept responsibility for any costs incurred if travel is booked and subsequently cancelled before you have received your passport.
Due to the security situation we cannot guarantee the delivery to Yemen of any full validity passport which is applied for. However, we can arrange for the passport to sent to the Embassy in Amman or Cairo for collection or we will retain the passport in Paris until notified by you of a forwarding address if you intend to leave Yemen in the meantime.
In addition to the supporting documents listed under What Passport Do I Need, in Yemen all passport applications for children must include legalised copies of both parent’s passports onto which the holder must sign and give their written authority for a passport to be issued to the child. Failure to provide these authorisations will result in delays and possible refusal of the application.
NATIONALITY ENQUIRIES: Please note that we are unable to provide advice on enquiries related to nationality. Please see the section on Am I Eligible for a UK Passport for further information.
All foreign legal documents submitted with a passport application (such as birth/death/marriage certificates, divorce papers, change of name documents, affidavits, etc) should be translated into English by a translation agency. You cannot get a friend or relative to do this for you.
