The Prime Minister and EU leaders convened in Brussels on 1 March 2009 for an informal EU Council meeting on the global economic crisis.

Gordon Brown also briefed leaders on the preparations for the forthcoming London Summit, which will take place in London on 2 April 2009.

European leaders last met on 7 November 2008 for a special EU Council on the financial crisis, where they agreed a series of measures aimed at reforming the international financial system.
