Migration and the UK

In relation to migration the Justice and Home Affairs Team works in pursuit of the following objective: to make migration work for the UK through joint working with our French partners, bilaterally and in the EU, and through effective public diplomacy.

The work of the team can be seen as fitting into four main themes:

  • A strong and effective common border
  • Reduced pressure from illegal immigration, particularly in northern France
  •  Significantly reduced flows of illegal migrants into France and the UK from source and transit countries
  • Action at EU level in support of the above priorities.

At the Franco-British summit in Evian in July 2009 a Franco-British declaration on immigration was signed, setting out our shared priorities for co-operation on migration issues.

A more detailed administrative arrangement relating to joint action to secure the common border and combat illegal immigration was also signed.
